Welcome

Thank you for stopping by! We are Michael and Camille, and we've been married for ten years. We have two little daughters, Shayla and Ivy. We met in college and both graduated with English degrees in 2005. Michael is an attorney, and I take care of Shay and Ivy at home. We love spending time together. We like cooking together, watching movies, and playing with Shayla and Ivy and watching them grow. We've been able to travel a little bit and enjoy learning about other cultures. Michael and I hope that you will enjoy looking through and getting to know us by our website. We hope that we will have a chance to get to know you, too.

This must be a difficult time for you as you are making a decision about your child's future. We know we can’t fully understand what you are going through. But we can at least understand that you need to follow your heart and do what you feel is right for your baby—and for you. We hope it will help to have as much information as possible when making an important decision like this. So, in case we can help, We want to tell you a little bit about us.

Please feel free to look through our website by clicking through the buttons above and the links in the sidebar. Thanks for taking the time to visit our website. If you would like to talk with us, please email at michaelandcamille@gmail.com. We would love to hear from you.

Our Story

Camie and I met in college our senior year. When I took summer classes in college, I generally took a light load. This allowed me more time to look at dating prospects in my classes. In my grammar class one summer, I noticed a bright, pretty blonde girl sitting in the back corner. After a while I decided I needed to sit by her, so I moved seats. If that wasn’t obvious enough, I invited myself to study with her. Those study sessions led to a first date, and then lots of other dates, and then a best friend to spend my life with. Who knew that grammar could be so romantic?

I never thought I would meet someone in an English class since most of my classes had very few boys in them! About halfway through the semester, one day Michael just appeared in the seat next to mine. Later, I would find out that he moved over because he wanted to meet me, which I thought was sweet. My first impression of him was that he was very smart and cute and had a great sense of humor. After the class ended, we started dating. Soon, we were spending almost every day together, and it wasn't long before I knew that he was the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.

I knew very early on that Camie was a keeper. We felt absolutely comfortable together—and I had never had more fun with anyone else. I tried to be patient as she fell in love with me too, and it worked! One night we walked by that classroom where we had met. We went in and sat in our old seats and talked about how glad we were that we had that class together. That’s when I pulled a ring from my coat pocket and asked her to stay by my side forever.

Michael and I were married in March 2005. We've learned a lot about each other and feel that we have a strong marriage. We feel lucky to have each other to go through the ups and downs of life's challenges. As time goes by, we have been amazed at how our relationship has grown as a couple and now as parents. Even though we have our challenges as all families do, we love each other and are happy that we can be a family.

We enjoyed being a family of two but were ready to have a sweet baby join us. We were thrilled to be picked by our daughter’s wonderful birth parents in 2010, and that October our little girl was born. We welcomed Shay home just a few short days later. It was a surreal experience, but one we will always treasure. It’s difficult to put into words how precious those days were with Shay’s birth family, and we are forever grateful to them for the decision they made. {To learn more about our open adoption, click here.} Shay is a very sweet little girl and has brought an immeasurable amount of joy into our lives.

We were so happy to be picked by Ivy's birth mother just this past May. We were overjoyed to be able to go through this adoption experience again. Although each experience was different, each was very special to us, and we are so grateful for both of our girls and our open adoptions with their birth families.

About Us

We love spending time together as a family. Michael and I enjoy getting outdoors, and Shayla loves going on walks and playing at the park. Michael and I like to relax at the end of a long day and watch a movie and one of our favorite TV shows together. We really love trying new restaurants and different kinds of food. We both love to travel and try to go to new places whenever we get a chance, even if it's just someplace close by that we've never been. We like hiking and being in the mountains, so we try to find opportunities for that, too.

We also like to visit with family and friends. Our families both live relatively close (a few hours away), and so we enjoy visiting with them every few months or on holidays. We feel lucky to have good friends around us, too.

Camille's interests:
I studied English in college, with a minor in editing, and worked for an educational company for several years. Now, I stay at home with Shay, which is the best job. I try to spend whatever time I can get reading. I like all kinds of books from young adult to nonfiction. One of my favorite ways to unwind is to get sucked into a good book. (Except when I can't put it down and end up staying up way too late!) Since being at home full time, I've tried to learn how to become a better cook and even tackled making a roast chicken! But I have to say that the best part of my day involves watching Shay discover her world and taking her to new places.

Michael's interests:
I like to stay inside and cook, watch TV or movies, and read sports magazines or mystery books. I like to get outside and barbeque, camp, hike, canoe, play games, have picnics, ride bikes, or ski. I also like running and try to keep up with it; I have run 10Ks and a half marathon. And I like to travel. I have a goal to visit every continent (maybe not Antarctica) and all 50 states.

Shayla's interests:
Shay is a very busy kid! She loves fruit, especially mandarin oranges. She likes giving her stuffed animals hugs and pushing them around in her mini-stroller. She also likes to have a little dance party, and she has really sweet dance moves! Shay squeals with joy when Dad comes home and loves having him chase her around the furniture until dinner's ready. She's also a big fan of the park, particularly the swings, although it took her a little while to warm up to them! She's got a sweet and curious personality. It's so much fun to watch her discover new things everyday.

A Letter from Us to You

We are so happy that you would take the time to read this letter. We know you have important decisions ahead of you and that you must follow your heart to do what you feel is right, whatever that might be. As with all important things, the more information you have now, the better. We hope this book will help you get to know us: Camille, Michael, and Shayla. The main thing to know about us is that we love our family. In fact, “family” is a word with many meanings for us:

A Family of Two.
In March 2005, we were married and started our adventurous family of two. We snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef, hiked through Arches and to the top of Mt. Timpanogos, watched 4th of July fireworks in Washington DC, and went to concerts and football games together. We learned how to lean on one another when life gets complicated. We learned how to love and support one another and how much joy comes from that, and we wanted to add to our family.

Our Extended Family.
The two of us grew up in fantastic families. We both come from families with four siblings. Our brothers and sisters are counted among our best friends. We have 5 adorable nephews and 5 darling nieces—including twin toddlers on Michael’s side. We have learned so much from our own parents, who are now loving grandparents. For example, Michael’s mom used to say to put a stop to fights among the kids: “Our home is a safe place.” That meant that whatever was happening outside the walls of our home, we all deserved to feel safe and loved at home. That stuck with us, and it’s what we want in our own home now.

An Adoption Family.
In October 2010 and in May 2015, we were chosen by our beautiful little girls' birthparents to be their mom and dad. Words cannot describe what an honor that was and is. Shayla and Ivy are a great kids, and we love being their parents. Shay has a big heart, and she’s ready with a hug and kiss whenever they’re needed. She is an amazing big sister. Ivy is just tiny, but we can already see her sweet personality coming through. Camille is a stay-at-home mom, and she and Shay stay busy with crafts and games and endless trips to Shay’s favorite place: the park. Michael looks forward to coming home to the three loves of his life. That is when daddy becomes a monster for chasing, a horse for riding, a lap for sitting and telling stories, and an attentive admirer of art projects.

Through our kids' adoptions, we have come to understand family in a bigger, better sense. You don’t have to share blood or genes to be family. In fact, through Shay and Ivy we have welcomed their inspiring birth mothers into our family, with whom we love to exchange emails and calls and get together for visits. We enjoy spending time with them and know that they are and will be an important people in our and our daughters' lives.

Our Future Family.

Being blessed with Shayla and Ivy have been two of the greatest joys we have ever experienced. But we’ve realized that there is enough love in our little family for more. We are ready to welcome a child into our home, and to welcome that child’s birthparents into our lives as well. A child that comes to us would be well cared for and loved because we love being a family, and there is nothing that is more important or special to us. We wish you the very best in your journey and hope that you will find comfort in these difficult decisions.

We hope to hear from you.

About Open Adoption

We are excited to add to our family again through adoption. And, we know it is a wonderful way to have a family. Our two adoptions have been the most amazing experiences (and continues to be), and we feel incredibly blessed to be Shay and Ivy's parents. There are no words to describe how important they are to us. They are in every way our daughters, and we love them both so much. We feel privileged to be able to be part of adoption, and look forward to having this miracle happen to us again.

We know this must be a difficult time for you as you look for parents to take care and love your child. We cannot begin to express our gratitude for birth parents. We want you to know how courageous we think you are. Whatever your decision will be, whether you decide to parent or place your child for adoption, we know you have great love for your child. Shay and Ivy's birth families are very important to us, and we feel so grateful to have them be part of our lives.

Our greatest joy has been to provide a stable, loving, happy home for our kids. We hope, as you get to know us, that you will feel like your child would be well taken care of and would receive all the love and support he or she needs to have a happy life. We know that not all adoptions look exactly the same, so we'd like to tell you about our open adoption with Shayla and Ivy's birth parents. Shay's birth mother wanted a website to keep track of Shay's pictures, so we set up a private blog for her, which she has the password to and can decide who she'd like to give that to for access to the site. We regularly update the site with pictures and stories about Shay and how she is growing up. We also send printed pictures to her birth mother (we have more contact with her than her birth father at this time). We email and text with her from time to time as well. We've had several visits with Shayla's birth mother, which have all been great experiences for us. We are so grateful that she chose us to be the parents of her little girl, for which we could never thank her enough. We feel like these moments that she can have with Shay are our way of showing how much she means to us. We know that these updates and visits mean the world to her, and it makes us happy to do them. And, she also just happens to be super fun to be around! She loves to laugh and have a good time, and it is the best thing to watch her love on Shay. We really enjoy being a part of her life.

Ivy's adoption is still quite new, but we have been fortunate to already have built a relationship with her birth mother. Ivy's birth mother chose us to adoption her daughter about three months before she was due to give birth. We got several months to text and talk on the phone and exchange pictures. We finally got to meet when Ivy was born, and it was a special time for us to be together. Because we don't live in the same state, we had to wait a couple weeks before we could fly home. This gave us the opportunity to visit several times with Ivy's birth mother and her family and friends. We're grateful that we have so many pictures and memories with Ivy's birth family. Ivy's birth mother wanted printed pictures instead of a website. We send her updates weekly right now, and will probably send pictures and letters more on a monthly basis in the future. Because we live far from each other, we won't be able to have visits as often, but we'll have to make the time count when we are able to get together. We text frequently with Ivy's birth mother and give her updates on how Ivy is doing, and we love hearing about how things are going in her life, too.

We also know that there are as many types of open adoptions as there are types of people, and so we are more than willing to discuss what sort of things would be important to you and to find what works best.

If you decide to choose adoption, we know how important it will be for you to know that your child is safe and loved. We are ready to welcome another child into our home, and to welcome that child’s birth parents into our lives as well. Through regular letters, photographs, emails, and occasional visits, we would do whatever we can to help you feel confident that your child is well cared for with us. We would be happy to send you updates as often as you would like, even on a weekly basis. We are open to your ideas and care about your concerns. We look forward to talking with you about a level of openness that we are both comfortable with and building a relationship with you.
These are a couple of examples of things Shayla's birth parents have liked. Please click on either of the pictures shown for a closer look.
We took pictures of her with a teddy bear
from the day she was born. Shayla's birth
parents have a bear just like the one pictured,
so that they can see how much she's growing.
We have started the same thing with Ivy's
birth mother, with a little stuffed frog. =)

We keep up a website with pictures of Shayla. We updated it quite
frequently when she was first born, and now, we post pictures
every couple of months. This is an older screenshot of the
website, but will hopefully give you an idea of what it looks
like. We would be happy to put together something like this
for you and your family, or something else you might prefer.

Thank You!

Thank you for visiting us. We'd love to get to know you and hope that you will contact us in the future. Please feel free to send us an email.

Michael on Camie

I will give you three reasons why I’m glad to have Camie in my corner as we go through life. First, she strikes a perfect balance between maturity and fun. She knows that there are some things worth taking seriously, like managing our money, working hard, and taking care of responsibilities. But she is also great at letting loose—dancing, playing, and laughing hard. Ask anyone who knows her: Camie has an unforgettable laugh. I love it. And its an amazing asset for her as a mother.

Second, Camie is smart. She graduated from college and got good grades, but there’s more to being smart than that. She is interesting to talk to and has great ideas. She is open-minded and creative. She comes up with great ideas for her time with Shayla and is a great teacher. I love to talk with her about everything from the meaning of life to the day’s small events.

Third, Camie loves with her whole heart. There are no wishy-washy emotions with her. Camie is sensitive and caring, especially when it comes to those close to her. Her memory is amazing—she can remember details of things that have happened years ago—because of how much she loves the people that have crossed her path. She always demonstrates genuine concern for me, and I know she would do anything for me. She tells me and Shayla she loves us at least a dozen times a day, and I know she means it every time. I couldn't ask for a better companion, and Shayla and I are lucky to have her in our lives.

Camie on Michael

Michael is my best friend, and I feel like the luckiest girl to have found him. The first thing that attracted me to Michael was how responsible he is. I know that might sound kind of weird! But I really like how he has ambitions for the future, and then sets out to accomplish them with enthusiasm. He never lets fear hold him back, and he works hard to achieve his goals. I like the fact that he is a man with a plan! Michael is natural leader, which is to say that he’s not overbearing or bossy, he’s the complete opposite. He works well with people and steps up to the plate when he’s asked to, and he does a good job. I can always count on him.

Michael is kind and generous and patient with others. He loves being around people and looks for the good in them. He always makes time for and is there for the people he loves. I always say that his mother must have taught him well because he has an amazing amount of respect for people.

One thing I love best about Michael is his subtle sense of humor. He can talk to anyone and get them to smile. He always keeps me in stitches at home, and we have a great time laughing together. Unfortunately, I am not as humorously gifted as he is, so I try really hard to make him laugh back! His sense of humor also allows him to have a laid-back attitude about life. When I stress out, he finds the silver lining and helps me to look at the bright side. He doesn’t take life too seriously, and he helps me to laugh my way through life as well.

It's been so wonderful to watch Michael with our girls. From his first moments with them, something in him changed--I could see it in his face. He truly beams when he's with them. He comes home from work ready to play. Shay knows the sound of the key in the door and runs over to meet him. I like to think of them as sparring buddies because there is nothing that Shay loves more than playing chase with her dad. She especially loves getting caught! And she just giggles the whole time. Michael's gentle side really comes out with her as he comforts her when she's upset. He loves to cuddle with Ivy, and feed and rock her. He's a very involved dad, and he loves to take her places and show her new things. Though I realize I'm biased, he's the best husband and father I could have imagined.

Us on Shayla

Shayla is an amazing kid! She has grown so fast, and we love watching her grow. She is adventurous and fearless, ready to fly through the air on a swing, climb to new heights at the playground, and fall and be caught by her dad. Shay has a really sweet disposition. Even when she was an infant, she always had a patient and happy nature. She loves to be entertained and explore her world.

She loves to meet new kids and have them over to play. It's so fun to watch her interact, and laugh, and make friends. She is tender-hearted and can get her feelings hurt, but she's also brave and keeps trying new things until she can figure it out (she climbs on everything--which sometimes gives us a heart attack!). She wakes up talking and doesn't stop until she goes to bed! She is very inquisitive and loves going to preschool to learn new things.

Shayla is already a fantastic big sister. She is gentle and affectionate—practiced with nieces, nephews, and friends' little siblings. She gets very curious around babies, watching their every move and trying to make them smile. With her little sister, her loving spirit will shows through.

Ivy is a very sweet and wonderful baby girl. We feel so lucky to have her and her birth family in our lives. Her little personality is already starting to show through. She can track objects with her eyes, and will make funny faces. She is a great little cuddler, and we take all the snuggles we can get. She sleeps pretty well at night and is eating more and more every day! We love being her parents, and hope that she will one day get to be a big sister, too.

We Filled in the Blanks

Michael and I tried to find something that would help you to see our personalities, and we came up with this. We hope it will help you to get to know us a little better.

Extended Family

We have supportive family and friends around us. We both come from great families who we love to spend time with. We've also been able to make wonderful friends from college, from our church, and from jobs. I have several friends who I grew up with who live nearby, and it's been exciting to see their families grow.

Camille's family:

I am the third of four children in my family. I have an older brother and sister and a younger sister. All of my siblings are married and live close enough to visit on a fairly regular basis. On my side of the family, we've got four nephews and two nieces--lots of cousins for Shalya and Ivy!

My parents are great people. My mother grew up on a farm with a large family and learned the value of hard work. My dad also taught me that it takes dedication to reach goals. Growing up, my parents stressed rules and tried to treat all of us fairly. They also instilled in us the importance of working for things that we wanted. Whenever I got into trouble, my parents came to talk with me about what I'd done wrong and helped me to realize how I could do better. We also had a lot of fun growing up! My brother and sisters loved to make up games—like one we called “Green Ghost” which basically meant rolling around on the floor until we hit each other (not hard). We also went on trips to visit relatives and see new places together, and those times are a lot of fun to look back on. My parents always showed lots of love to their children, and I have always felt like an important part of my family. From my parents, Michael and I have learned some things we want in our own family. We also want to teach our kids the value of hard work, give them boundaries to help them make good decisions, and create lots of opportunities to have fun and enjoy being together.

Michael's family:
I am the oldest in my family and have three younger siblings: two brothers and a sister. My sister is married and lives with her family in another state. I have one brother who is married, and he also lives out of state with his wife. My youngest brother got married to a great girl last August, and they are going to college.  Shay and Ivy have four cousins, three nieces and a nephew (including a set of twins!).

My parents are also wonderful people. I actually grew up in my dad's hometown and his parents still live there with many of my dad's extended family. So, sometimes we get to see some of my aunts and uncles and grandparents when we visit. My parents have always been there for me. I remember when I got cut from the junior high basketball team. It was hard on me, but it was just as hard on my mom. She knew how important that was to me then—she wanted me to be happy and reach my goals, and she shared in my disappointment. My parents continue to show that level of support today, and they still answer important questions about life and come up with great advice.

My family has taught us some important things about what a family should be. We want to be able to teach our children how to get along with people and how to forgive and love others. We also want to teach our children to be generous and giving and to find joy in helping others.
